The Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation is asking for your help to complete a survey regarding the research and development needs of te Australian olive industry over the next five years.

The survey is being conducted by Richard Gawel and Ian Rowe, and the results will serve as the basis for the next 5 year olive industry research and development plan. The plan will be presented in draft form for comment in the coming months. So if you have an interest in the Australian olive industry and want to have your say about where you would our National research efforts focussed then you should complete the survey on-line here.

Why should I spend the time on this?

  • There are so many questions that we would love to answer right now which would enable us to make better olive oil and table olives. But good research is expensive and money is tight, so we are relying on you to tell us how those scarce dollars should be best spent. So here’s your chance to help direct those research dollars in the direction that you think they should be going.
  • What value is the Plan?

  • Since the renaissance of the Australian olive industry in the mid 1990’s, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) has encouraged, financially supported and managed a wide range of R&D projects that have benefited our industry.
  • However, nothing stays the same. What was important to you 5 years ago may or may not be that important to you now. That is why we are revisiting the 5 year R & D Plan. The new plan is pretty well about one thing – advising those that have the appropriate scientific skills and knowledge as to what we now think is valuable, so they can deliver research outcomes that answer the questions that matter.

    Who is developing the Plan?

  • Two long term members of the olive industry, Richard Gawel and Ian Rowe have been commissioned by RIRDC to develop the 2009-2014 R&D Plan.
  • Will I have other opportunities to provide input to the Plan?

  • Yes, via your State Councils and at the Olive Expo in Canberra in late October.
  • When is the Plan due for release?

  • During April 2010.
  • OK, I’m convinced I should do the survey. What about confidentiality?

  • Your response is confidential and only aggregated responses will be made public. You do have an option at the end of the survey to include your e-mail address if you wish to receive more information about the new Plan.
  • How much time have I to respond?

  • The sooner the better, but definitely before Monday 24 August 2009. Why not click on the link now? It will only take about 10-15 minutes of your time.
