A con man passed off some 25 tons of industrial olive oil as edible, commercial oil, and distributed it in Israeli grocery stores, until he was caught in a raid by officials from the Health and Agriculture ministries. First reported in The Marker, the scam was discovered when the authorities raided two factories run by the man in the north, where they found large quantities of industrial oil ready to undergo processing. The man reportedly took the industrial olive oil, which is not sold for human consumption, and treated it with an assortment of chemicals in order to pass it off as retail olive oil.
