A record 136 entries were received for this year’s New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards – 117 extra virgin and 19 flavoured olive oils. The previous best was less than 100, with this year’s high count reflecting both the bountiful harvest and the increasing quality of NZ oils. International judges Reni Hildenbrand from South Africa, Georges Feghali from Lebanon and Robert Harris from Germany/Australia will join New Zealand judges Debbie Worgan, Rachel Priestley and Rachel Costello in next week’s judging process in Auckland, with the results to be announced at the (sold out!) NZ Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards Dinner at Parliament on Saturday, 15 October.

We’ll announce the major award winners in the October 28 edition of Friday Olive Extracts and bring you more details in the December issue of Olivegrower & Processor.
