Food manufacturers are still allowed to hide palm oil on labels – Wildlife such as orang-utans urgently need your help to change this.

Australians have overwhelmingly agreed that palm oil should be labelled on food products and want their government to mandate it, according to a Galaxy News poll. Public support has increased in past year, with 90% of Australians wanting mandatory labelling and nearly all Australians (95%) wanting the Government to require manufacturers to declare the source of all oils on their packaging. Zoos Victoria is urgently calling on Australians to visit zoo.org.au/palmoil and ask the representative of their state or territory to support fair labelling.

The Australian and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation will meet on 28 April to consider whether to label the source of all oils on food products including palm oil. Victoria remains the only state or territory publicly committed to support mandatory labelling of all oils.

While this is part of Zoos Victoria’s Don’t Palm Us Off campaign, the message that “Mandatory labelling of oils will provide transparency and grant consumers the right to make informed decisions based on health, nutrition and environmental values” is one that we’ve also been taking to Government for years, so let’s get onboard.
